The Riverview Murders: A Paul Whelan Mystery

Wonderful book
I really enjoyed this look at the Chicago that never is seen on E.R. He is a very talented writer. Sue

Fantastic
In 1946, former GI Ray Dudek has juts returned to Chicago after serving in the war. Instead of a hero's welcome, Ray is murdered during a holdup in the Riverview Amusement Park. His two closest friends, Joe Colleran and Mike Minogue leave town soon after that to open a bar in Florida. In 1985, Mike is murdered on a Chicago pier overlooking lake Michigan. When Margaret O'Mara reads about the death, she hires private investigator Paul Whelan to locate her brother, Joe, who she has not heard from since 1959. ..... Paul begins to investigate the case and quickly links the two murders that are four decades apart, especially since the deceased Mike loved to talk about his cronies who had a falling out just after the war. As Paul gets closer to the truth, he realizes that friends and lovers have kept a secret that if disclosed could lead to the deaths of the person revealing it and the recipient because someone wants the secret to remain hidden. ...... THE RIVERVIEW MURDERS is a fantastic who-done-it that brings alive the gritty North Side of Chicago. Paul, the low rent private investigator, is a great character who is for those readers who enjoy an old fashion hard boiled detective. The story line, like its four predecessors is fast-paced, action packed, and loaded with more twists than a street pretzel. Chicago is Michael Raleigh's kind of town as no one paints the town this well since Ferris's day off. .......Harriet Klausner

Walking Raleigh/Durham (Walking)

Best way to learn about the area
This is such a useful book it compells a statement. If you visit the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area or North Carolina, or if you live there, this book is an extraordinary guide, written with a sensitivity to place, attractions, events, history, excitement of being there, which makes it a stimulating guide. I have passed places often, but only after I read about them in this book did I see them and experience them. She's done a first-rate job of writing about and explaining an area many people think they already know, but will now realize there is more to learn. Thanks.

"The Best Way to Get Around the Triangle"
"Walking Raleigh/Durham" by Rebecca C Mann is a "must buy as a Christmas present" for friends or family currently living in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill region. As a former Durham resident, I would have loved to have possessed the history, culture, geography and walking oppotunities supplied by Mann's little book. The maps are clear and well drawn and include specific distances and safety considerations. The local architecture and lore are fun and enlightening, and it all fits into a coat pocket with ease. While I intend to send copies to Durham and Chapel Hill friends who walk for exercise, I'm also sending my 65+ year old parents a copy. With descriptions of museums, parks, and historic sites one passes on different walks, it will give my parents something to do after they've watched poor Carolina lose yet another football game. If you need to give a UNC-CH, NC STate, Duke, or Peace College bound student a high school graduation present they'll really appreciate, this book would be it. Better yet, buy it for their parents, who are much more likely to use it during campus visits to their offspring than are the students themselves, since the latter spend most of their time searching for on campus parking spaces. On my next visit to the Triangle, I'm taking "Walking Raleigh/Durham" along.

USED SOME OF THE IDEAS IN THE MEETING. SUPER!
Just wanted to let you know that yesterday while I was on my way to an appt with a reporter I listened to your tape on "Pitching your story..." and then used some of the ideas in the meeting. Super! I also figured out a Duh! for myself by listening to the tape. When I had my Whitewater Kayaking School the single best source of business for me was free listings in the Post Weekend section, kinda like 54 hours. I've been ignoring this opportunity in the business pages and in the Washington Business Journal. Duh!

Thanks... Bob

Bare Essentials: A Detective Inspector C.D. Sloan Mystery
Published in Audio Cassette by Dh Audio (August, 1997)
Authors: Catherine Aird and Edward Raleigh
Average review score:

The case of the unhealthy health farm...
This audio edition, narrated by Edward Raleigh, is a small, unabridged stories cross-section of the short story collection _Injury Time_. I prefer Robin Bailey's narration for C.D. Sloan mysteries, but he, alas, is no longer with us, and Raleigh is quite good.

The title story, "Bare Essentials", has Sloan, Crosby, and the rest of the murder enquiry team at Berebury's local health farm. Mrs. Culshaw, who gained great riches and a lot of weight in commercials for Barclay's biscuits as a little girl, was trapped in the Hot Room and roasted alive - 'kebabbed', in Dr. Dabbe's words. Her husband, a Jack Sprat with a failed firm married to this rich woman, had motive - but also a cast-iron alibi, being out on the golf course with the pro when she died. How could he have done it? And if he didn't, who did and how?

Italian Short Stories I
Published in Paperback by Overlook Press (May, 1989)
Author: Raleigh Trevelyan
Average review score:

an excellent, representative sample of Italian short stories
The eight stories in this collection by Moravia, Pavese, Pratolini and other modern writers, have been selected as representative of contemporary Italian writing. The book presents the original Italian text and, on the opposite page, an English translation in a literal style, serving as an aid to reading the Italian more than as something to be read for its own sake. there are notes & biographies of the writers to help the student of Italian. The volume can also be used by Italians to improve their English skills.
